Effective Training

Posted by on August 19, 2013

Here are some tips to increase the effectiveness of your dog training.

  • Use positive reinforcement for desirable behaviors.
  • When the behavior is undesirable, make use of proper corrective methods.
  • Make sure you don’t ignore any kind of behavior, whether desirable or undesirable.
  • Never correct him if he hasn’t done anything wrong at that exact moment. Timing is everything!
  • Make use of repetition to establish proper learning.
  • Keep training short and simple. A few minutes a session.  Think quality not quantity.
  • Start with simple skills and once these have been firmly established, progress to more advanced.
  • Make training a daily part of your life. Training should be 24/7.
  • Be consistent with the commands or signals you use, and make sure each member of your family is also aware of this. You don’t want to end up with a dog that’s totally confused because every one in the  house has their own methods of training.
  • Think of everything you teach your dog as a trick.  Tricks are fun to teach and if you think of training as fun, your dog will too?   Training is what YOU make it!
